From Stick: Well since my first plants have broken the surface I guess it's time to start a garden thread. I am sure this will be blank for a little while but feel free to put in pictures and news from your gardens. Here is a spreadsheet to help with planting and scheduling a garden. Change the "Frost Free" date at the top of the spreadsheet to update the dates to your local area. It is available for Excel or Open Office. |

I look forward to its harvest season.

Well Guys...
No zoo for the shy blonde raccoon. We took her and released her by a stream in the country with only 2 homes and about 20 acres. she should be safe for now.
Hopefully she stays there! Very cool, and calm there with a stream. :)

Poca he's so cute!!!
How far'd that critter come? You don't live in Maine do you? That would be a trip (No pun intended) ;)
This one I believe is a Blonde Raccoon.
They are adorable arent they! We went off the links that Aya sent and found that the blonde raccoons live up north here. They are rare, but not almost extinct.

Wow, He's Really Light Brown
Racoons are brown, and black and grey, and their noses are shiny black.
I've never seen one this light. Even the young'ens are darker like their parents.
LIVE and let live.
This Is A Sign I Tell Ya...
Don't know what it means, but it's a sign for sure...
Yeah.
Squirrels that live in Louisville near the UL campus that are albino don't even eat the nuts off the trees anymore. They dumpster dive. It's spooky a couple of us were talking about this just yesterday!

Don't know if I read or heard it but someone said that the acorns fell before maturity due to weather mod. :(
Chief was kinda in shock this morning.
He told me he caught a brown raccoon... all I sad was What? LOL...Once I saw it Then I knew chief wasn't loosing it. Very funny morning.

Poca,
I've never seen a raccoon like that before. I did a little looking online and I found a picture of a coon that looks kind of like yours. If it is the same kind, you have a truly special coon on your hands. Here are a couple links if you are interested. The first is just a picture and the second is an article on it.

Well I called a lady that lives in our area that works
at the zoo. All the coon hunters in our area, I do not want this animal to be in harms way. It says that they are endangered. Maybe it will have a better chance of surviving in there care. Thank you Aya, The info will be a great help for getting this guy somewhere safe :)

Can't say that I have. Did it do much damage, or did you catch it in time?
It had eaten well the night we were gone.
It seems that he has gained the respect to be released elsewhere. This one has brown eyes too, They look blue in the light. One of Gods unique creatures, got to let it go.

Garden Update 8/2
Well, all of the rain that we have had has helped the garden produce greenbeans, peas, and
finally brocolli! The Red potatoes, and Idaho Potatoes are ready to start digging up
"Selectively". The spices are ready to be cut and dried for homemade spagetti sauce.
Brocolli and the greenbeans are being packed at least once a week for winter.
The only downfall to the rain is the weeding hasn't been able to be done enough! (It all
looked so go 2 weeks ago!)
Here are some updated garden photos!

Well, I just had my first tangle with the tomato hornworm. I went and bought some marigolds today so we'll see if it keep them off my peppers.
try planting borage next year within a few feet of your tomatoes. They will bush out, so not too close, but they deter the hornworm, they have edible flowers high in vitamins and can be made into wine or cough syrup that increases "spirits", and they look nice.
Thanks stick. I had heard about borage deterring hornworms but I had no idea what it was or why I would want it. Now I will have to look into getting some. Maybe I'll even try my hand at making the wine. I think with five kids I may need it. ;)
As a funny aside, my grandpa used to call hornworms "God's squirt guns" and showed my younger siblings how to use them.
Oh Lordy...
Does that mean yin's squeezed them?
~Gross~
Nah, we toss them on the ground and stomp hard on one end. They can shoot really far when done right.
LOL...
Fire 1, Fire 2 Run!!!
LOL...
Girls and bugs 101?
Yuk! Those are the ugliest bugs I have ever seen! I am glad there is something fun you can do with them. Thanks Aya!

I read an interesting idea for keep rabbits out of gardens and deer out of trees. You go to your local dog groomers and get a bunch of their hair clippings. For the garden, spread the hair around the outside of the garden. For the trees, put in cheese cloth bags and hang from the branches. Neither animal can stand the smell of dog hair so they leave it alone.
Darn it.
My green peppers are doing horrible. Anyone know of a remedy?

yeah, what Stick said.
define horrible. Compost, or compost tea, helps almost anything, but you gotta be more specific. What's wrong with em?
They are losing leaves and
remain scrawny. Also their is some sort of fungus on my darn tomato plants. It's happening everywhere in KY this year.. it resembles what happened to my squash last year.

Garden Update!
Garden Update
Well all looks good for the rest of the week. Chief has corn field 3 almost ready to plant! All the others are taken care of as far as the rototilling and a small amount of weeding. We have a row of seed tomato plants to transplant into the space that didn’t workout in the garden. It was way to cold here in the ground and the air for the tomatoes, and the original cucumbers. Now we have replaced them in the 80 degree temps!
Here are some updated garden photos!

Last of the radishes came out on Sunday!

Pumpkin Patch New Yesterday!

Strawberries are looking good but next year will be much better! Some good advice for the strawberries! Transplant all stringers in September, Fertilize and water, Cover with straw. They will be huge and have many more berries the following year. I missed the late fertilizer last year, we will have some to munch but it will cost to can this year.

Great looking garden!
I can't believe how much it's grown in just a short time. I'm impressed. My tomatoes are just starting to bloom here. I bought the plants but they have been a bit slow in coming out. I didn't see peppers in your garden. Do you have some? Mine are what is growing the best. I have one that I had to rescreen because it out grew it's old one.
The weather we have had...
the air was too cold the ground to cold. Most of the normal was out the window. do not be discouraged. You need some fertilizer. The tomatoes need it right away(before fruit). any kind... Dollar store around 2.00 - 3.00 in a box. Only every couple weeks unless you have used none...then every week. The flowers tell me your on the right track. The pepper plants died...they are extremely sensitive to the ground here. My mom's always grow fine... Freak kinda thing! I wish I had your your luck!!! I can not grow a pepper to save my life. Keep it up! Chief the water king... Morning and night! That is great advise as well! Do not change at all with the peppers they are a differant kinda' beast!
A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out. ~ Walter Winchell
That stinks about your peppers. I haven't used fertilizer on my tomatoes but since I used Miracle-Gro, I thought maybe I'd be okay. I am getting more tomatoes now. I think that mine were just started late by where I bought them from.
Hi Mama-san how are you and your babies along with your bun in the oven? I have been doing some healthy spiritual work with your 2 oldest children to calm any hidden concerns about grandma and moving. It's just the little stuff that keeps us humans alert to possible trouble in family ties. This is ofcourse to help you release any ties binding you to this property.
Hi krmaya,
I'm doing well and so are all the kids including the one in the oven. It's been kind of interesting though because I haven't gained any weight the last two months so maybe I'll actually end up losing weight after I have this one. Thank you for your thoughts for the kids and the house. I am really praying that the house sells quickly because cleaning is getting old fast. I suppose I'm gaining self-discipline out of all this but sometimes I wish I could lapse back into my sloth habits. I will probably be off again in a few minutes because I have a bit more cleaning to do before heading to bed.
lol!
i will start focusing on the kids like krmaya is. that's a great idea. yeah... cleaning sucks.
Yes it does!
I will give it up totally if you would like! LOL...

Just don't stop with your armpits, that would be rude!
holy crap you two!
kay, you two deserve a prize or something. that's HUGE!!!!! corn field #1 LMAO!!!
thanks for labeling your pictures!! much appreciated. i couldn't identify veggies to save my life!!
Hey Poca
What's all the white powdery stuff on your plants?
It is for the bugs....
It is called "dust"...Organtic section from the Agway. The plants are already being eaten by the nibblers! the lettuce pic you can see a small hole. They would eat everything without it, especially after that heavy rain we had and the humity shot threw the roof!!

is it Diatomaceous Earth?
Great Pics Poca
That corn IS gonna be knee high by the 4th of July! Just WOW!
LIVE and let live.
Thanks Cougar!
I am so happy to see it growing like it is...How fun!

Looks good, your tomatoes are outdoing mine and I have a huge head start...then again you bought yours pregrown so maybe not. My tomatoes are big and bushy but not a lot of fruit on them.
About the strawberries, I don't know what to say because mine are defying the laws of strawberries as I know them. Mine produced pretty heavily in their first year which is not supposed to happen and now each plant is throwing off runners like crazy. Each one is throwing at minimum 3 and most have like 5 or 6. So the ones I didn't cut off I positioned between the rows to make new rows and now some of them are already as big as the mother plants. They have only been growing since mid april!
Also I'd love to see a big wide angle shot of everything if you can fit it when things really get started booming. I like seeing a huge amount of flora, it brightens my day :)
